Homegoing Celebration for

Mrs. Betty Ann Lewis was born on July 3, 1942 in Cornelia, Georgia to the late Mindia Lyles Fields and the late Sim Lyles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wardell Lewis; grandmother and grandfather, Mary Hawks Shueburg and Henry Shueburg; brother, Jaroy Lyles; aunt, Ruth Mae Putnam; and uncles, Johnny Shueburg and Roscoe Shueburg.

Betty Ann’s family moved to Gainesville, Georgia when she was a child. She attended Beulah Rucker, Northwestern, and Fair Street High School. She recounted her times there with great joy and fondness. She was a pillar in the Newtown Community and was committed and active in her church, Trinity C.M.E. and a powerful example of the love of God to everyone who met her. Her presence in the community will also be missed dearly. She was EVERYONE’S grandmother. No one who ever came to her home ever wanted for a meal, a place to lay their head, or a hug of encouragement. This love of God transcended in all aspects of her life.

She loved the church, where she sang in the choir and enjoyed preparing food for each and every event that Trinity would have, She gave her time, talents, and treasures to her church family because she believed they were indeed her family.

Her work ethic was unmatched as she began working when she was only 12 years old. She worked in various domestic duty jobs and in the poultry industry until she found work with Northeast Georgia Medical Center in 1977. For her exceptional work with NEGMC, she received Employee of the Month awards alongside many other accolades. She retired in 2005 after 27 years of service and is sorely missed to this day.

“Bett” enjoyed traveling around the world. These places range from Italy to Germany where she spent time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, as well as attending Senior Center Activities. She loved all kinds of music and took every opportunity to partake in the concert experience, where she enjoyed dancing the night away.
