Dorsey Mize was born on January 29, 1940 in Gillsville, Georgia to the late Gertrude Mize and the late Lelia Bell Buffington Mize. He passed away quietly following a brief illness on June 8, 2022 surrounded by his family and loved ones at the home of Tim and Sherry Mize. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Brown Mize; sisters, Connie Jones, Nancy Turner, Daisy Brown, Barbara Cheeks, and Bernice Danzy; brothers, Floyd Mize and Jayln Mize.
Dorsey attended Fair Street School. He was the running back for the Fair Street Tigers state championship team in 1956. Dorsey was a member of St. John Baptist Church before joining Pleasant Hill UMC. He was the oldest active male at Pleasant Hill. While at Pleasant Hill, he served as lay leader, usher, Sunday school teacher, groundskeeper, and director. Furthermore, he was a member and a leader of the United Methodist Church serving as the secretary. He retired from Wilheit Trucking. In addition to his many endeavors, he was a mentor and volunteer for the Hall County Boys and Girls Club. Everyone fell in love with his quiet and humble spirit.
Survivors include sons, Tim (Sherry) Mize and Tracy (Monica) Mize, both of Gainesville, GA, and Kim (Val) Mize of Jacksonville, FL; daughter, Candice (Mike) Gullatt of McDonough, GA; 11 grandchildren, Tamika Jackson, Shardee Mize, Tamika Williams, Trabian “TK” Mize, Kabree Mize, Tribecca Mize, Caleb Mize, Deion Mize, Mychael Gullatt, Anatashia Godwin, and Brittany Butler; 4 great grandchildren, Jahmeil Cantrell, Kahlil Jackson, Braelyn Gullatt, and Izaiah Mize; sisters, Claudine Randolph and Wynonia Moss; numerous nieces and nephews; in-laws, Annette Westbrooks, John “Mickey” (Latisha) Brown, Carlton (Delores) Brown, Robert Lee Brown, and Grady “Gene” Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Thursday June 16, 2022 at 1pm at Pleasant Hill UMC. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be Wednesday June 15, 2022 from 1pm-5pm at Dexter T. Sims Mortuary, LLC in The Rev. Charlie, Jr. and Conchita Sims Memorial Chapel. Viewing will be held at St. John Baptist Church from 6pm-8pm.
