Remembering The Life and Legacy of Fred Cornelious Jackson, Sr.

Deacon Fred Cornelious Jackson, Sr. began life’s journey on October 25, 1925, in Collins, Georgia, to the late Lonni and the late Lucille Shaw Jackson. He was called home to be with the Lord on June 28, 2026. He was lovingly raised by his grandmother, Laura Shaw, whose wisdom, faith, and unwavering love helped shape the humble, devoted man he became. Fred was preceded in death by his son, Gregory T. Jackson; three sisters, Catherine Futch, Ella Bernice Sims, and Alma Cureton; and two brothers, Willie Henry Jackson and J.D. Jackson.

At the age of 17, Fred answered the nation’s call by enlisting in the United States Navy. As a Seaman First Class stationed at Pearl Harbor aboard the USAT/USS St. Mihiel, he faithfully served his country with courage, dignity, and perseverance during a time of segregation. His duties included loading naval ships with artillery and supplies, and he treasured the opportunity to meet President Franklin D. Roosevelt during one of the President’s visits to Pearl Harbor. Furthermore, he also served as a World War II Navy Veteran.

Following his honorable discharge, Fred returned home with a determination to complete his education, one of thirteen graduating from Collins Colored School in 1950. He later became a highly respected self-employed craftsman whose painting, fencing, landscaping, and lawn care reflected the pride, excellence, and integrity with which he approached every task. His commitment to serving others earned him the distinction of Citizen of the Year in 2008.

A faithful member of Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, Fred served tirelessly as Church Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of the Deacon Board, and Junior Choir Director. His quiet strength, servant’s heart, and steadfast commitment to God’s work touched generations and left an enduring mark on his church family.

On November 29, 1954, Fred was united in Holy Matrimony with the love of his life, Carlene Irish Jackson. Together they built a home rooted in faith, love, cherished memories, and devotion that blessed their union with nine children, five of whom preceded him in death. Though Carlene was called home in 1993, the love they shared remained a treasured part of his life’s story.

He leaves to cherish his memory to his devoted children, Freddie C. (Karen) Jackson, Jr., Charlene R. (Calvin) Jackson, Rickey A. Jackson, and Charla L. Jackson, along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, dear friends, and his beloved Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church family.
